he Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has cautioned against the Senate’s proposal to ban textile fabric imports, warning that such a policy could disrupt Nigeria’s fashion and garment industry and threaten the livelihoods of an estimated 10 million Nigerians.

In a statement issued by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muda Yusuf, the economic policy advocacy group said that while reviving Nigeria’s textile manufacturing industry is an important goal, imposing a blanket ban on textile imports is unlikely to deliver the desired outcome and could create serious challenges for businesses that depend on imported fabrics.
According to the CPPE, textile fabrics are essential raw materials for several industries, particularly fashion, tailoring, garment production, furniture, and interior design, making import restrictions potentially damaging to businesses across the value chain.
The organisation noted that Nigeria’s fashion, garment-making, and tailoring industry is significantly larger than the textile manufacturing segment and is conservatively valued at about ₦10 trillion. It added that the industry supports approximately 10 million livelihoods and remains one of the country’s most vibrant creative economy sectors.
